Lovely molded stoneware Bennington pitcher. Hunter with rifle and dogs surrounded by game and a floral foliate design on both sides. Typical mottled brown lustrous Rockingham glaze over a yellow clay body. This type of ornate molded American stoneware was popular throughout the Victorian period, and this is a great example.

Size: 7 3/4″ tall.
Condition: Overall very good with typical highpoint wear. No cracks. There are a few expected base flakes, but the handle and lip are about perfect.
A few thoughts on stoneware: Stoneware was originally designed as utilitarian objects. Typically, these pieces were put into service for many years. As such, stoneware will generally show signs of heavy wear and usage. Some chips and cracks are usually in evidence, and serve as reminders that stoneware was first and foremost meant to be functional. These factors should be taken into account when evaluating a piece.
