Large Dated 1647 Birch Bark Box

Exceptional dated 17th century oval birch bark box. Pine lid and base. Body is paper mache with birch bark wrap. Stylized pine tree design on lid. Hand wrought nails. Old replaced leather handle. Profusely decorated body, with carved name, “NEALS WARLONd,” and the date “1647.” Underside of lid is carved with a variant of the same name, spelled “N. WADLUND.” Interior shows evidence of grease or fat residue. Likely this was used as a portable container for one or both substances, which could be utilized for any number of functions from lighting and cooking to insect repellent. Traces of painted design on base. Lid fits snugly.Fantastic old mellow surface.
