Early 18C Miniature Leather Table Chest

Click main image above to enlarge.

Sweet centuries-old miniature table chest or box. Pine body. Exterior covered in tooled leather with designs on all sides and lid. Wrought iron handle held in place with cotter pins. Brass latch and hoop on front. Interior is lined with old paper, as was the custom of the period. In this case, a page from the History of England used to line the bottom. Additionally, ink stamped flowers adorn the paper interior. Finally, the base strips are secured with hand hammered rose head nails. This is a fantastic all original 270-320 year old piece in superb untouched condition. Just a primo example in a rarely seen size. A similar (but larger) example can be seen in Neumann’s, Early American Country Antique Furnishings (Pg.43, Plate 152).

Date: 1700-1750.

Size: 7″  x  4″  x  2 1/2″ tall.

Condition: Overall excellent for such an early piece with expected aging and use wear. Leather lid is strong and firmly attached. Brass latch is slightly loose. Only real loss is one side of the interior liner is long gone. The leather certainly could be moistened, but I like it the way it is (untouched), and will leave that decision to the new owner. Please use photos and description to determine condition.
