Fantastic folk art paper mache death mask. Human hair. Painted face. Woven mesh back. Incredible untouched patina.

This would have been molded directly onto the face of the deceased for an accurate casting. Most typically, this sort of mask was reserved for the elites (presidents, kings, etc), but here is a nice simple home made example, which might have been displayed in the family home to remember the departed, or simply preserved as a final memento. A powerful and unusual object. Midwest origin.
