Fantastic redware bowl. Outstanding marbled glazed interior. Nicely crimped pie crust rim. A great looking example in super condition for it’s type.

Date: 1830-60.

Size: 7″ diameter. 1 5/8″ tall.

Condition: Overall excellent for this type of early piece. Expected wear and aging with some glaze crazing and minor scrapes.

When evaluating condition on early utilitarian objects, it is important to remember that they were quite often in use on a daily basis for many years. During this service, it would be expected that a good amount of wear and tear would occur. Redware was generally one of the less expensive materials, and would not have been handled with too much care. As a result, a large percent of the pieces that have survived are in heavily used condition. More often than not, they were used for cooking and heating on the hearth, and many examples are found with blackened bottoms and heavy glaze loss from the temperature extremes. That is not the case with this particular bowl, and helps account for it’s far better than average condition.
