Outstanding folk art penwork decorated pen case. Probably Italian or French. Turned and threaded fruitwood case with matching turned and threaded bone insert. The best untouched original surface with nice patina. Wonderful folksy images cover the entire case. The top shows a villa or home along with some trees and two oddly designed animals. Likely a dog and a horse. The base show a spectacular tree and a pair of fighting boys. The top and base are done in pinwheels. All the decoration done with ink, and then lacquered. This is an unusual and special piece.
Date: 1750-1780.
Size: 6 1/2″ long. 1 1/2″ diameter.
Condition: Overall excellent for such an early delicate object. Expected aging and wear. Old age split below horse. The threads have warped slightly with age (as should be expected), and the lid does not quite shut tight. Please use photos and description to determine condition.
