Rare historical Staffordshire-type Pink Luster cup porcelain cup and saucer. Brushed luster banding. Large transfer scene on the saucer depicts Father Mattew, a popular Victorian temperance reformer of the 1840’s until his death in 1856. He was known as “The Apostle of Temperance.”

Top reads, “THE CELEBRATED ADVOCATE OF TEMPERANCE ADMINISTERING THE PLEDGE.” Below reads, “MAY GOD BLESS YOU & GRANT YOU STRENGTH & GRACE TO KEEP YOUR PROMISE (of abstinence).”

The cup has a shortened version of the saucer’s design on one side. The other shows a beehive with, “BY INDUSTRY AND TEMPERANCE OUR WEALTH WILL INCREASE.” Delicate applied handle.

Date: 1840 – 1856.

Size: Saucer has a 6″ diameter. Cup is 4 3/4″ wide to handle, and 2 1/2″ tall.

Condition: No damages. Expected use wear. Several in-making flaws: 3 marks in saucer bowl from a separator in the kiln, a hair line in saucer base (bottom only), Glaze line on cup lip. These are all typical of the period, and should not detract from the overall scarcity of this 150+ year old pair.
