Exquisite folk art pine sewing box. Relief carved pinwheels on lid and beveled panels on the front and back. Square nail construction. Old packing crate board used for base. Divided interior. Hand stitched pincushion on interior lid. Marked, “M.J.” Under the pincushion is a pencil inscription that reads, Presented to Miss May Johnson/ May 17th 1892/ by Y. Sheffer.” The box looks earlier with the square nails. Perhaps Mr. Sheffer embellished an older box, and then presented it to Miss May? Excellent old dry surface. A great looking primitive box.

Condition: Expected aging and wear with some minor warping. Top half of lock plate missing from lid.
