Fantastic ornately embellished folk art carved gourd. Likely made as a souvenir love token for a sailor to take back home in the mid-19th century on one of his voyages to the South Seas Islands.

The central image is a fully rigged three masted ship, entitled “GLENVILL.” The ship is afloat on a rippling sea with six sea birds flying above. All within an oversized heart. The outer rim is adorned with a foliate pattern. A tour de force of gourd carving, and such a large one at that. Great old surface patina from years of handling. A superior specimen.
