Outstanding primitive and ancient iron mortar and pestle. Continental. Crudely cast mortar with applied knob handles. Fantastic period patch repair. Round sprue (casting) mark on base, typical of 17th century manufacture. Massive base and body wear indicates years of heavy use. Original pestle is a forged iron shaft with a wrought disk end. Superb untouched patina. Heavy pair weighs over 6 lbs. Remarkable that the two pieces have managed to stay together through so many centuries. An excellent early set.
